Frequently Asked Questions

Before starting driving lessons, it is natural to have a few questions. Here are answers to some of the questions learners ask most often.

How long will it take me to pass my driving test?

There is no set timeframe because everyone learns at a different pace. Your progress will depend on several factors, including how often you take lessons, how much private practice you can complete and how quickly you develop safe and consistent driving skills.

What do I need before booking driving lessons?

You will normally need to:

  • Be at least 17 years old.
  • Hold a valid UK provisional driving licence.
  • Be able to read a vehicle registration plate from 20 metres away, wearing glasses or contact lenses if required.

How do I apply for a provisional driving licence?

You can apply online through GOV.UK.

Alternatively, you can obtain a D1 application form from most Post Office branches and return the completed form with the required documents and photograph.

Should I pass my theory test before starting lessons?

No. You do not need to pass your theory test before beginning driving lessons, but you must pass it before booking your practical driving test.

Starting your theory studies early is strongly recommended, as understanding road signs, rules and hazards will support your practical driving lessons.

Can I practise with a friend or family member?

Yes. The person supervising you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Be qualified to drive the type of vehicle you are using.
  • Have held a full driving licence for at least three years.
  • Meet the minimum eyesight requirements.

You must also be properly insured, and the vehicle must be roadworthy, taxed and display legal L plates at the front and rear.

Private practice can be very helpful alongside professional lessons, although it is not essential.

Learner drivers may only drive on a motorway when accompanied by an approved driving instructor in a dual-control vehicle.

Can I drive in Great Britain using a foreign licence?

This depends on where your licence was issued and your residency status. Use the official GOV.UK foreign driving licence checker to find out whether you can drive in Great Britain or need to take a UK driving test.
